Ready to Announce a Winner: Blu-ray

Blu-ray logoIn the same form as US Presidential elections, before the final count has ended, I am finally ready to announce my opinion of who winner is of the next-gen disc format war between Blu-ray and HD-DVD:

The Winner is: Blu-ray.

I've always backed Blu-ray from the beginning, as i've always believed it's a bigger 'step forward' in terms of advancing from the regular DVD formats of the present: a 15GB single-layered disc on HD-DVD compared to a 25GB one on Blu-ray? That's 66% more data per layer on the Blu-ray disc.

Plus, I think i've been sucked in by the … Read more →

Pelvic Thrusts: UT3 Action

Me Winning a Round of UT3I've spent a fair few nights over the past weeks playing a lot of Unreal Tournament 3 online (i.e. with other people over the internet), and it's been awesome, pelvic thrusting awesome.

For the unaware, in UT3 there are these pre-set 'taunts' that you can give the opposition. One of these taunts is the ever-popular 'pelvic thrust'.

If you win a round in the deathmatch mode, the reward for victory is that every player in the game sees the winning player on their screens for about 15 seconds. Most winners choose to use this 15 seconds of gaming fame by … Read more →

Loving This Weather

RainMan I am loving this weather.

The weather in Brisbane really since the start of the Christmas break has been raining and cool. This is awesome for three reasons: one, it's totally awesome; two, it's raining and putting some water in our almost-empty (or a very little-full depending on your point of view) dams; and three, this has got to be the coolest Christmas-time conditions that I can remember.

It's quite strange, because as Brisbane has been quite cool these past few weeks, the southern states have been sweltering in 40+ degree weather. It's quite the reversal of the normal … Read more →

2007: Year In Review

It's hard to believe that i'm doing this entry, this year has flown by like no other. I'm trying to think of reasons on why this has happened, but this year has really just flowed on from one thing to another that we've barely had time to catch our breath.

Anywho, onto the highlights.

January

- 3 Years On: The Unreleased Material: Maybe I should make a downloadable DVD of 'extras'... nah.
- Writing: Some thoughtful observations of 21st century literacy.
- Youth Conference Wrap-Up: Greek Orthodox National Youth Conference held in Brisbane, including photos

February

The Best and Worst of 2007

I've been wanting to do this entry for a while: a critical wrap of 2007's entertainment from my own point of view. This isn't really an overarching 'best and worst' of every single release of the year, but moreso a 'best and worst' of that which i saw/played/purchased myself.

Movies

Best Movie: Transformers

This was one of the easier decisions. Easily, easily the best movie of 2007 was Transformers. If you ignore the product placements, this movie was a masterpiece. As i said after i watched it, it was a perfect balance of comedy and action, it didn't … Read more →

Sick Christmas

Well it was definitely an interesting one: i spent nearly all of Christmas day home feeling sick.

The day had been planned: straight after Church go to Des's parent's place for morning tea, to my Aunty's place for lunch, then possibly the cemetery, and then onto Des's Aunty's place for dinner. It's the usual annual trench warfare of battling piles of food and missions to multiple relational destinations.

That was the plan. The actual day ended up being: woke up feeling very light-headed and dizzy as well as sick in the stomach; somehow managed to get to Church albeit 40mins … Read more →

The Cost of Gaming

It's been a great past few days. It's been so long since i haven't even thought about work on a weekend, i'm really enjoying the time off (and we've barely hit the weekday parts yet!).

Of course I have taken advantage of this time to catch up on some gaming. I've bought so many games in the past few months that they've quite literally piled up!

As i've promised earlier, I've also taken some time out to tally up how much (in pure monetary terms) this game wave has cost me. The list below contains each game, where i got … Read more →

Ending of Years & Awards

Today was (hopefully) the last day of work for the year. After a relatively comfortable working year last year, this year has been absolutely nuts. To say it's been interesting is a massive understatement: we're onto our 3rd IT Manager of the year, and i've found myself having learnt so much, mostly through having been made to do it by necessity.

This afternoon was also the office Christmas party in which we spent the afternoon at Victoria Park Golf Club. With the annual office awards i took out the Best Support award. I was basically a shoe-in being the only … Read more →

Footballing Goodness

It's been 24 hours of footballing goodness. Last night we played our last ever game at the complex at the Valley, as the owners of the place have sold up to developers and are moving it to West End.

We ended up playing in the last fixture of the place at 9pm last night, us comfortably winning the game 9-0, and myself scoring a hat-trick. It was a good lively game, and i think i played pretty good.

The bad news is that fixtures don't resume in the new complex until the start of February, so now i've got over … Read more →

A Normal Weekend?

Although this weekend was one planned for another one of work, unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately?) all the plans for our big projects fell through once again. So that means that I've had a normal two-day weekend this weekend, which is fantastic, but of course the other side of the coin is that the work has piled up even more and it might mean Christmas break work.

Anywho, i've played through the 'campaign' of UT3 these past few days, which means that from now on it's all online/multiplayer stuff, which recently has had me getting totally pwned.

I did have an … Read more →
