‘This should be interesting…’ Take 2 & Some Awesomes

Some will recall this entry from earlier this year. Well barely three months on, the new IT manager at work has resigned for family reasons, which are perfectly understandable. The timing absolutely sucks though, with a lot of the senior management people who are mainly responsible for recruiting a replacement having just gone on a few weeks leave.

So again it looks like a few interesting weeks are coming until a replacement arrives, and hopefully it won't be nearly as bad as last time.

It's all a little frustrating, as it comes just as things have settled down a … Read more →

Software Company Sues Whirlpool for Forum Posts

One of the biggest news items in Australian IT in the past 24 hours is that a software company, 2Clix, is suing the founder of Whirlpool.net.au for alleged "injurious falsehood" because of statements made by forum members in threads about their software. Whirlpool announcement here.

For the unaware, Whirlpool is a site concentrating on 'Australian Broadband News', but more famously has a fantastic public discussion forum in which people can discuss internet service providers and also basically anything else in separate sections. It's a mainly IT focused forum, and many IT professionals (including myself) hold the site and the … Read more →

Is Apple Moving Away From White??

New iPod Classic: no white! In the latest round of product releases from Apple, which includes the new generation of iMacs (their standard desktop computer range) and more recently the new line of iPods, I have noticed a very interesting trend.

Among both these lines, there are no longer any 'white' coloured products. What was once an Apple trademark - the stark white-coloured iPods and computers - now seems to be older fashion for the company. In fact, the only product that seems to have kept a totally white version is the lower line of MacBooks.

Can i just say: Alleluia! and its about freekin … Read more →

Retro ‘New Joystick’ Gaming

Logitech Extreme 3D ProDespite me not wanting so spend anything more on computer games for a little while, on Friday I ended up forking out $40 for a new joystick.

I ended up buying a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro (pictured), which was probably my only choice within my budget and wanted set of features. I could've gone for this one, but it is a little out of my price range.

I needed a new joystick because my new computer doesn't have the old game port for our old joystick (our trusty old Sidewinder 3D Pro), as I've been wanting to replay the … Read more →

Backups: There Are No Excuses

Backups**Rant warning!**

On TV this week there was a story on a woman offering a $20000 reward for her stolen computer because of all the precious digital memories she had stored on it. She said that she did have a backup drive, but that was in the same bag as the computer. (*sigh*)

As i tell everyone, backups are important! As with anything important, you shouldn't put everything in one basket. If you have data (digital photos/videos/music, personal information, documents etc) that you simply could not afford to lose, you should make sure to cover your bases so that under … Read more →

I don’t normally do these but…

I don't normally do these but i guess I have been drafted by Mel, so here it goes:

Rules for this 8 interesting things post:

* Each player must post these rules to begin the meme.
* Each player starts with eight random facts or habits about themselves.
* People who get tagged must blog about their eight things and post these rules.
* At the end of your blog, you need to choose eight people to get tagged and list their names.
* Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they’re tagged, and to read your … Read more →

Spyware Rants & Weekend Wins

Back at work at for another disgraceful Monday, and what the congested traffic didn't spoil, calls from family members who had once again stuffed up their computers, certainly did. Seriously, i don't get people and spyware/adware.

No matter how many times they screw up computers, and no matter how many times you explain it and demonstrate to them, they still manage to stuff the poor computers full of so much crap that it automatically shuts down before you can even type a URL into a browser.

But seriously, this is a problem. Not only for consumers, but for operating systems … Read more →

Lunar Eclipse

Lunar EclipseOn the eastern side of Australia we've just had the best seats in the house for a total lunar eclipse. Although a bit of cloud threatened to ruin it early on, it cleared up and gave us a mostly unobstructed view.

Our unit's balcony faces dead east, so it gave us the perfect position to not only watch the eclipse, but also take a few pictures too. We took out our digital SLR camera, put on the biggest lens we had, and set it on a tripod. The results are a new album in the Gallery, as well … Read more →

Trivia & Bribie Paniyiri

Last night me and Des participated in a trivia night for the Solomos Society with a lot of my family. I've been to a fair few trivia nights before, but the questions at last night's one were really difficult. I could only really confidently answer about a quarter of the questions.

The big event this weekend was the first Bribie Island Paniyiri. We were all very nervous about this all week, because in south-east Queensland it has been raining all week. Don't get me wrong the rain has been absolutely fantastic - apparently the last week has seen the first … Read more →

Bioshocked

BioshockI haven't bought any new games recently, and it was my intention not to buy any more games until much later in the year when Half Life 2: Episode 2 and Crysis came out. However, another highly anticipated game, Bioshock, has just been released.

I had dismissed it a while ago because it wasn't really my type of game, but it had caught my eye in the last week because of the ridiculously high reviews it has been getting from nearly every reviewer. And by 'high' I mean that I have yet to see a review from a reputable … Read more →
