2008: Year In Review

Like last year, i'm finding it enormously hard to believe that I am already doing this entry again. In a way, it feels like the year has gone by in a flash, but in others, when one looks back at all that has happened over the past 12 months, then it does feel like a bit of time has actually passed.

Anywho, here we go:

January

- Pelvic Thrusts: UT3 Action: All the good gaming following on from the end of last year was awesome. Playing UT3 online at the start of the year was an extremely enjoyable highlight.… Read more β†’

The Best and Worst of 2008

Last year I really enjoyed doing my 'Best and Worst of 2007', so I thought why not do the same for this year!

So here it is: out of the stuff I saw/played this year, here is my critical wrap.

Movies

Best Movie: Wall-E.

This year was a pretty tough choice for me. There were a lot of good movies, a few great ones, and very few awesome ones. But for the the stand-out had to be Wall-E. That might surprise some in a year that included a theatrical Star Wars release, but I really loved Wall-E… Read more β†’

Christmas 2008

A big 'Merry Christmas!' to all! Christ is born, let's all glorify him!

This year's Christmas, probably more than any other, has really snuck up on me. Once again, today didn't really 'feel' like Christmas all too much.

It's possibly related to none of us actually having anything to open from under the tree this morning: the PS3 we got each-other has already been up and running for over a week now.

We did the usual Church-Brunch-Lunch-Dinner tour-de-Brisbane, but this year we made quick pit-stops at home between each leg. I've got to say that despite the extra driving that … Read more β†’

Blu-rays and Playstation 3s

Playsation 3 Blu-ray playerI'm not quite sure how to start this entry, because two years ago I would never have seen myself in this position. But I guess i'll come right out and admit it: this week I bought a Playstation 3.

Now I realise this is going to seem unusual to those who know me and also for the regular readers of this blog as I have generally been critical of the hardcore consoles and the Playstation in general, but like much of my other expenditure, this was mainly motivated by one thing: Star Wars. πŸ˜›

This week the first Star … Read more β†’

Christmas Approaches & James Bourned

Nothing much worth of mention has happened recently. Christmas feels like it's storming towards me like a runaway train, and i'm the cow stuck in the headlights... or train-lights... :S.

Anywho, just when I thought that there was plenty of time to go until Christmas, we're already a whole week into December. We got started on the Christmas preparations today by putting up our Christmas tree. I really must get started on everything.

On Friday night we went and saw the Quantum of Solace. Overall i thought it was really average; actually, honestly i thought it was really less … Read more β†’

I Just Don’t Understand Arsenal & Opera Mini 4.2

Celebrations as Arsenal beat ChelseaAlthough I didn't stay up to watch the game on Sunday night, Arsenal beating Chelsea at their home ground absolutely delights, overjoys, and thoroughly confuses me all at the same time.

Like the Manchester United victory three weeks ago, I was expecting an Arsenal bloodbath in this game (Arsenal have lost twice since the Man Utd game, to mediocre-ish opposition). The fact that they actually managed to not lose, let alone win the game against the billions-of-dollars of Chelsea is amazing.

Anywho, we spent the majority of the weekend down the Gold Coast attending a wedding that was down there. … Read more β†’

Sonic Unleashed, Internet Censorship Petitions, Kitchen Capers

Sonic UnleashedGaming season continues this week. After finishing Call of Duty: World at War on Monday, yesterday I picked up Sonic Unleashed for the Wii.

I'm a big fan of Sonic, despite some truly horrible and lots of mediocre games since the glory days of the originals on Sega Master System and Megadrive. I really enjoyed the last Sonic game i got (Secret Rings), and this one isn't too bad either.

The daytime stages of the game are great, but the nighttime 'Werehog' stages are really ordinary. I'm not quite sure why they went in that direction for this … Read more β†’

Western Digital Are Awesome & Ankle Owies

WDTVAfter the recent death of my Mediagate and the subsequent (although discounted) refund i did get from Umart, i was looking around for a new media player, because there was no way in heck I was getting another Mediagate.

It just so happened that afternoon I got the refund that I stumbled upon the WDTV (Western Digital TV).

I've always been a fan Western Digital (they are one of the biggest manufacturers of computer hard-drives). I always bought their drives; they're reliable, quiet, and efficient. Plus their external drives (especially their small 'Passport' range) are really decent too.

So it's … Read more β†’

Another Week Goes By… & Red Alert 3

Red Alert 3So another week has gone by and i've barely noticed it was there. It's a bit hard to believe that it has already been three weeks since we have been back from overseas.

As you can probably guess, i've had little to blog about lately. All that's recently happened is me getting Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3. It's pretty much the standard C&C game with a different storyline. I have been, and still am, very critical of the fact that the C&C games have not changed much in over 10 years, specifically and especially gameplay-wise.

But as long … Read more β†’

Mediagate Failures & Arsenal Triumphant

Arsenal vs Manchester UnitedIt's been a pretty ordinary week overall. Returning to work has been, as expected, a bit of a let down after four and a bit weeks of holidays, but there wasn't any disasters in my week back so I guess it could have been worse.

There have been a few technological-related happenings around our place. Firstly, I picked up a new router. I've had good experiences with Netgears, so I decided to upgrade my existing one to the WNR3500. The upgrade was mainly to get one with Quality of Service so that the wife's VOIP calls aren't mixed up … Read more β†’
