Memory

One of the things that I wanted for my birthday was an upgrade to my laptop's memory. My laptop already has a considerable 512MB of RAM, but to give it an extra kick in the games and other resource intensive programs that I've been using I wanted to upgrade the memory. I would rather have got a better graphics card, but with most laptops (including mine) that is almost (if not) impossible without completely ripping apart the motherboard and chipset.

So the next obvious conclusion was to increase the memory, which is as easy as opening an access panel on … Read more →

Dean’s Commendation

Yesterday afternoon I received the Dean's Commendation letter for my academic performance for 2nd semester of last year. I knew it was coming because I knew my GPA of last semester merited it. If a student achieves a GPA of 6.00 or higher for a particular semester of full-time study (at least 4 courses) they are awarded a Dean's Commendation.

At UQ the IT department is included in the EPSA faculty (Engineering, Physical Sciences, and Architecture). Dad found it highly amusing and ironic that although i did not follow in his footsteps in doing architecture, that I am getting … Read more →

Cold

Not at work today, because very ironically in the sweltering heat of the past week, I have caught a cold. I had a sore throat on the weekend, but the cold has just really hit me in the past few days.

Haven't blogged in a while, so I might as well catch up:

A recent event was none other than my birthday on Saturday. We had some family over for on Friday for both my brother and my birthdays (his was on Friday), and Saturday day me and Despina just had a quiet day.

That night we went to Church, … Read more →

Macs

Not been up to too much lately. Just work and sleep.

One thing that I have found beneficial at the place that I work, is that they have a few Apple computers that I use fairly often (well, only 2, and one Apple multimedia server). I have never really had any experience using Macs before, so I have enjoyed learning something new.

I've got to say that they aren't as bad as I thought they were. In fact, they're actually quite good and have really grown on me. Don't get me wrong, there is no way that I'm going to … Read more →

Rage Against Rolando’s Machine

Been so busy over the past few days I haven't even had time to blog about one of the most enjoyable and satisfying things that I've ever done with a computer. More on that a little later. (and shame on you if you are thinking naughty!)

Starting on Saturday, I went over Andrew's place to help them with the wireless network that they tried setting up. They had an adsl modem/router trying to plug into the wireless router. I got the wired network working as normal, but the wireless part was beyond my powers. I think Andrew's mum eventually rang … Read more →

Computer time

One thing that doing work experience has confirmed is my belief in 'Computer Time' (patent pending).

Many people have heard of 'Greek Time' (i.e. the uncanny ability of Greeks to be late for everything by a considerable period of time), but not many have heard of 'Computer Time'.

This is a term I have coined to describe how long it takes to do things (especially development and programming) on computers. If you think it will take X amount of of time to develop, implement, or program something, I believe you should multiply that amount by, say... around 4 or 5, … Read more →

Sem 1 2005 Courses

Been a very enjoyable and busy past few days. Tuesday work as normal. Wednesday was of course Australia Day and also a public holiday, so I didn't have work.

I thought that I could use the extra time provided by the mid-week break to finally choose my courses for my last semester of uni. Personally I love mid-week public holidays on a Wednesday. It juts breaks up the working week so well, into two mini-weeks that are so much easier to handle. But I think lobbying for a mid-week 'weekend' would be a bit much.

Anyways, back to the subjects. … Read more →

GOOOAAAALLL RAV-4!!

On Saturday, I spent a mostly lazy day hanging around home. I put up my Homestar poster in my room. I've been meaning take a photo of it and put it up here, but I really haven't had the time. It's times like this that I wish I had a camera phone so i could take quick photos wherever I am and quickly upload them onto this blog.

At night we went to Church, and made a very entertaining exit out of the Church grounds: arm-in-arm we skipped out the gate singing: "We're off to see the wizard, the wonderful … Read more →

Tired & I got my Homestar Stuff

Really tired now, I only got around 6 hours of sleep last night. We had relatives come up from Sydney and they stayed till around midnight. It's been non-stop the past few days. All I have done is wake up, work, see Despina/relatives, go to sleep, repeat.

A highlight of yesterday was finally receiving the Homestar Runner stuff that i ordered a while back. Everything is cool, especially the DVDs and the t-shirts that I ordered.

Sleep now, very buggered.… Read more →

Leonardo & City Cat Capers

A few weeks back i mentioned about starting to read The Da Vinci Code, and a few nights ago I finished the book. Although I found it an interesting and slightly entertaining read, I wouldn't say it was a great story or style, and I definitely wouldn't say I found it convincing. However, it is easy to see that all those people who don't know anything about Church history could find the book somewhat persuasive, if not even attractive. (I don't claim to know a lot, but I know enough to know that a lot of the historical 'facts' … Read more →
