The thoughts, opinions, happenings, and just plain ramblings of a seemingly boring person.

Blogging & Drained

Blogging ImageToday I was thinking about 'blogs' themselves, and how nearly every public personality/media outlet now have them on their own websites: from radio shows to journalists to politicians, seemingly everyone has a blog.

When I started this blog two and a half years ago, there weren't that many blogs around. LiveJournal had been around for a bit, and blogger was beginning to come into its own, but still there wasn't that many people with blogs.

Previous to that, i didn't really see the point of a blog, but after setting up more for fun after I properly established this site… Read more →

Balls & No More Homepage…

I've had a unusually dreary last few days. Work as normal, and then just hanging around home otherwise.

Today I also bought my very first football for myself: it's an el-cheapo $10 ball from Rebel Sport. The pump that I bought along with it cost more than the ball itself! But still ~$20 for a ball and pump is pretty good.

Teamgeist all used at the World CupI am still wanting to get the ball that was used in the World Cup (the one with the revolutionary new panel layout, shown right), but all that the stores are selling at the moment are normal balls spray-painted … Read more →

RIP Shoutbox – What Next?

Question MarkAfter saying it was going to happen at the start of July, a few days ago my host finally upgraded the web-servers this site runs off to PHP5 (the MySQL databases however, still remain unchanged). As expected, a few things broke. Luckily this blog, the Gallery, and my own custom content management system that the site-proper uses has seemingly emerged intact.

The only casualty of the upgrade was the Shoutbox that was on the site homepage. The script was apparently not coded with quality, and has been abandoned by the developer, hence its incompatibility with the new version of … Read more →

Census Night 2006 & Zazz

2006 Australian CensusTonight is the 5-yearly Census of Population and Housing in Australia. If not sure about other countries, but here it is compulsory to fill out a census form for every household.

What is interesting about this year's census, is that for the first time we are given the option of filling out our form online. I promptly did ours on Sunday night, although technically we are supposed to do it tonight (but the ABS didn't not allow me to complete the online form before tonight, so I'm sure that they planned this in, in order for them to take some … Read more →

A Very Surreal Game

I've just played probably one of the most weird and surreal games of indoor.

I played a pretty good game, scoring two lucky goals in the first half to help us to the break with a 3-0 lead. But then a few things happened. Firstly, Nick got sent off for tripping a guy. I didn't see it all that well, but the decision looked a bit harsh; however it was only a blue card, which means that he won't get a suspension.

So we were playing the game with only four players: Rolando in goals and three on the field. … Read more →

Software Development

I've had a strangely bland week. Throughout the week i've felt pretty much drained, both during work and after. Hence the lack of blogging this week, and also the lack of blogging topics.

One thing that I do think that is blog-worthy (and i've been meaning to blog for some time), is a quote from the author of the original blog script that this blog is based off. He writes about what it's like to develop software:

Imagine you were a sculptor, but you can make anything appear out of thin air. Imagine you can make whatever you pull … Read more →

Water Recycling Paranoia

Australia's Drought*Compulsory rant warning*
As many know, Australia in general is currently going through a water crisis. In our city of Brisbane, the situation is particularly dire, with the region under Level 3 water restrictions, which means among other things, no hosing of any kind is allowed. The dams are currently at around 28% capacity and falling, and at this rate they say the water will run out in less than a few years. We are praying for rain for the dam catchment area.

With the drought not looking at being broken any time soon, a flood like downpour is … Read more →

The End of Eras: Pentium & Kazaa

One of the last Pentiums: Pentium 4In this past week we have seen the end of a few IT eras. Probably most significant is chip maker Intel officially closing the books on the 'Pentium' era and wholly leaping into the multi-core era with its latest massive release of the 'Core 2 Duo' chips.

As most computer users are aware, the Pentium has really been the mainstay of computing over the past 10+ years, so this is really a massive change not only for Intel, but the wider computing public. Although AMD has stolen a little of Intel's thunder in recent years, I still personally prefer the … Read more →

Exercise

Most people say that as soon as you get married, you start packing on some extra kilos. Well it's been true for me: since the wedding in February i've put on about 5 kilos on top of my 'normal' weight of the past few years.

I mostly attribute it to diet (big surprise there, hehe) as well as not getting as much exercise than I have usually been doing over the past few years. Since uni finished, there has been a lot less walking involved (and there was a lot of walking involved around that campus). Although I have … Read more →

Football Venting

It takes something that makes me either very happy or very angry to make post an entry merely 3 hours after i've already done one, and i'm sure you can ascertain from the title of this entry which of the former situations is making be write this.

Firstly, we won tonight's indoor football game comfortably 6-3, so the result is definitely not the reason for this vent. The reason for this vent is rather the officiating that took place within the match.

Never in my 15 years of playing football have I been so incensed with the referee. Refereeing the … Read more →
