Symphony of Legends

Symphony Of LegendsTonight we had the immense pleasure of going to the Symphony of Legends, which was the Queensland Symphony Orchestra (and an accompanying choir) performing a collection of video game scores.

In my tweet tonight I mentioned that it was an interesting mix of high-class symphony regulars dressed in suits and gowns, as well as geeks, some dressed in shorts.

There were some really great pieces, but for me the highlight was the Journey score. It was fantastic to hear it performed by a live orchestra, not to mention being conducted by its own composer, Austin Wintory.

Other honourable mentions … Read more →

New Mobile: Google/LG Nexus 5

Nexus 5The two-year mark on my HTC Desire S was coming up, so over the past couple of months I have been looking for a new phone. My criteria was a mid-range (and mid-priced!) Android phone that I've normally gone for, and one that has 4G so it would be a noticeable upgrade.

The Desire S was a great phone, so in sticking with HTC, I had my eyes set on a HTC One Mini. It was around my price-point, and it wasn't as large as the top-tier phones like its bigger brother. I was about to pull the trigger and … Read more →

Office 2013 & The Last Day of My 20s

As tomorrow is my 30th birthday, today marks the last day of me being in my 20s.

Honestly, it is a little depressing, but I am also thankful to have made it this far. Here's to a fantastic next decade!

Over the past few days I've been having a little bit of a play with the newly released Microsoft Office 2013. I had received a free upgrade after purchasing a license of the 2010 Home and Student Edition late last year to update Despina's laptop after receiving much consternation from her about still having to use Office 2003 (which I … Read more →

2012: Year In Review

So another year passes in the blink of an eye. It's been a relatively big year for us: moving into our finished house and the overseas trip were the biggest standouts (I miss Disneyland already :(), not to mention the complete overhaul of this very website.

Here's the highlights of 2012's blog posts:

Getting Back Into (receiving) Pwnage

Pretty much since we moved out of the unit and into the 'intermediate' house, I haven't really played many games online.  There was a variety of reasons for that: the house was small and hot, I was busy and exhausted from building the 'final' house, other health reasons, etc. This year overall has probably been the leanest gaming-wise for a long, long time:  I've really only played Mass Effect 3 and Max Payne 3 on the PC, nothing on the Wii, and only Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II on the PS3.

I'm not really sure why it's been … Read more →

US/UK/HK Trip: Explanation & Summary

As with our last big holiday 4 years ago, "one of the downsides of having a non-anonymous blog is that you can't blog a lot of stuff because of it, and [before] going overseas for a few weeks is probably one of them".

Last week we got back home after spending almost 4 weeks overseas on what will probably be our last big holiday before seriously settling down (if you get my drift ;)).

Our goal for this trip was to mainly go through the US, as well as to go back to London for another Arsenal game. What … Read more →

US/UK/HK Trip: Hong Kong & Home

Part of our 2012 US/UK/HK Trip. See the explanation and summary entry.

Coming back from London on our way to Australia, we had planned a quick stop in Hong Kong; staying there for two nights, but really only one and a half days (we flew in on Monday evening and left Wednesday night).

Unfortunately, all we ended up seeing of Hong Kong was our hotel room and the few streets around it in Kowloon. I was slowly getting better, but unfortunately Despina was coming down ill herself. She was starting to get a temperature, and the cheap digital thermometer … Read more →

US/UK/HK Trip: London

Part of our 2012 US/UK/HK Trip. See the explanation and summary entry.

From New York we flew overnight into London and dropped our bags off at the hotel. We were quite buggered, but we decided to go up to Arsenal and have a look at our tile in Armoury Square for the first time. It was great to finally see it first hand. The weather was typical depressing England: cold, overcast, rainy. After that we pretty much just checked into the hotel and took it easy.

Wednesday was the beginning of a not very nice time in London for … Read more →

US/UK/HK Trip: New York

Part of our 2012 US/UK/HK Trip. See the explanation and summary entry.

We caught the train to New York rather than fly. It was a good choice in my opinion, as it meant that we left from Union Station in Washington and arrived at Penn Station in New York; so there was no long commute out to airports, no going through rigorous security, and no waiting for bags and alike. The train was roomy, and at just over 3 hours, it wasn't a long commute at all. Plus we got to see a few cities, like Baltimore and Philadelphia, … Read more →

US/UK/HK Trip: Washington DC

Part of our 2012 US/UK/HK Trip. See the explanation and summary entry.

We arrived in Washington DC on Sunday night. The landing was a bit unnerving, as the plane made a relatively steep turn not far off the ground to line up with the runway (I assume to stay out of Pentagon airspace). I've flown a fair bit, but when you can tell the make and model of cars looking down the wing at the ground during a turn at night, it is a bit unusual.

Anywho, we mainly did the typical touristy thing during our time in Washington. … Read more →
