Home UPS

CyberPowerUPSEver since we moved to this side of the train tracks, despite being only 500m away from our the unit we used to live in, the power reliability in this neighbourhood has been very dodgy. Although we live in a relatively affluent area in modern city in a first world country, I would not call the power in our area 'reliable'.

We seem to have a power outage roughly once every couple of months, and that's not including the ones caused by weather events. It's not like I expect the power to stay on during a major storm or heat … Read more β†’

The Season of Broken Things: New Monitor

LG 24MP77 monitorIt seems like recently has been the season of things breaking, malfunctioning, or generally needing replacement. It was my relatively new PS3 a few months ago, and now recently my not-so-old Dell monitor starting showing funny colours across the screen.

The monitor was a few months outside of the three-year warranty (which admittedly, is a half-decent warranty period), and Dell weren't too kind in offering me options for a replacement. I've got to say that I'm pretty disappointed in the quality of both the Dell product and the service. They seemingly couldn't track down my purchase in their own system … Read more β†’

New Mobile: Sony Xperia Z5

sony-xperia-z5Although I had hit the two-year mark on my Nexus 5 back in October, I wasn't in the mood to look for a new phone. Up until recently, the Nexus 5 had served me well.

However, things went downhill with the recent Android Marshmallow update. General buginess, especially regarding the battery life, was very disappointing. I'm not alone with these type of issues, and I've got to say that each Android update since KitKat has introduced more problems compared the usefulness of new features introduced, and it takes Google months to issue fixes.

Ironically, the last two releases (Lollipop and … Read more β†’

These are my tweets for 2015 (minus replies and retweets). All the URLs are still Twitter's 't.co' ones, as the Twitter API doesn't spit out the original URL text.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (spoilers!)

Star Wars: The Force AwakensOk, to get the warnings out of the way, I considered writing this post as a spoiler-free one, but with the amount of crucial plot points that I want to write about, I don't think that is possible.

So, do yourself a favour, and see this movie as soon as you can, because if you are at all connected to the internet, there is not much chance that you will be able to go very long before you are spoiled for at least one major plot point in The Force Awakens. That said, you have been warned: SPOILERS AHEAD!Read more β†’

It’s a Great Time to be a Star Wars Fan

Disney-Star-Wars-LogoIt's a great time to be a Star Wars fan.

Although The Force Awakens is still 3 months away, Disney is gearing up the Star Wars franchise for continued expansion (and of course, continued money-making).

One thing that I have applauded in the post-Disney takeover is the commitment to a consistent Star Wars canon, no matter the medium. I remember reading a lot of the official 90s Star Wars books and comics (and also games), and being disappointed that a lot of what was pushed out was seemingly less or more canon than other things. It left me perceiving … Read more β†’

Steam Home Streaming with Ori

Steam Home StreamingAfter recently getting an Intel NUC primarily for use as a Plex Home Theater (PHT) client, I was forced to install Windows to use PHT because of the general buginess of the OpenELEC-PHT Linux distro.

Turns out that was a blessing in disguise, because having a full Windows computer attached to the TV has made the device so much more handy and flexible for other uses that I never originally intended for it.

Other than being able to easily watch anything you can on a computerΒ on the TV (for example, being really useful for sports streaming), the use that … Read more β†’

Pebble: *Time* for a Sequel

Pebble Time

I got the original Pebble smartwatch in November last year, and since then it has become an invaluable tool in my day-to-day tech world.

When Pebble announced the colour e-paper Pebble Time via a Kickstarter campaign, I backed it immediately. I was totally sold on the colourΒ e-paper screen, but also the built-in microphone for dictating text replies to messages.

I received my Kickstarter Edition black Pebble Time a few weeks ago, and overall it has been a stellar experience.

Pebble have been fast in rolling out updates to the watch, too; in a recent update they've already responded … Read more β†’

Plexing with a NUC

Intel NUCFor the past 6+ years, a WDTV has served as the trusty media player for our living room: firstly playing stuff off an external hard drive, and then off our NAS.

Although the latest one is still going strong after almost 4 years, I recently saw a Plex Home Theater setup running on an Alienware Alpha, and was impressed at the great visuals and easy experience of the platform, as well as the 'on deck' items when watching through a series.

Despite the Alienware Alpha being an impressive living room gaming PC, it is way overkill for what … Read more β†’

Back to Cable & New Router

Asus RT-AC68UIt took almost three months of laborious, will-testing, patience-stretching torture, but I have finally bested the beast. We are now back on Telstra cable as our internet connection.

The reason for the move back to Telstra (whom I have no love for), was initiated by TPG's takeover bid for iiNet (owner of Internode), which the iiNet board has recommended. There aren't many companies in the world that I would say I am mortal enemies with, but TPG is one (and the only other would be Samsung).

Although I have loved the five years I have spent with Internode, there … Read more β†’
