Changing Avatars

There comes a time in a geek's life, where one must make a few changes. Sure, things could remain the same, but deep down one knows that one must move on.

In this I am referring to my seldom-used avatar, the image next to my name that is displayed on all forum and bulletin board posts, instant message clients and alike.

Lucas old AvatarMy existing avatar (shown right) was the 'South Park Lucas' character that has featured in many of the intros that i once developed, and has served me well for almost 2 years.

Unfortunately among other things, my rapidly declining … Read more →

More Football & Geekiness

Of late it seems like my life is revolving around football (soccer) and computers. Granted my occupation is computers, so that's a given. But football lately, and also into the immanent future, is also massive.

On the weekend was the FA Cup final of Liverpool vs. West Ham United. We watched it after my brother's engagement on Saturday night, and it was a fantastic game; from a neutral's point of view it was probably the best FA Cup final in recent history. Liverpool eventually won the game on penalties after the game with extra-time finished 3-3.

I think West Ham … Read more →

Long Live the Long Weekends

..unfortunately they never seem to live long enough. I'm in a little depressed mood that we have just finished our fourth and last public holiday of late, which made for four fantastic four-day working-weeks in a row.

I had a pretty good weekend; did the usual washing and cleaning on Saturday, went to Church Saturday night. We went to Pancake Parlour at the old Church in the city for dinner (Andrew somehow negotiated his way out of us all going to Sizzler, which he dislikes for some strange reason) to see off a few people who are going away. Wasn't … Read more →

Resting

I think these few days before Easter have really taken it out of me. I'm exhausted. But as they say, it's always darkest before the dawn.

It seems my anti-spam stuff on this blog has worked, not one spam comment so far. I hope i'm not speaking to soon...

I've had a fairly good Holy Week so far, but it is a bit weird having to work during the day and then basically go straight to Church afterwards. I'm so used to having uni or school which gave me enough time to sort of relax and chill-out a bit before … Read more →

Computer Happy, not Happy Samsung

This week was pretty busy as usual, after work we have literally been out every single night this week for various reasons. This week I have also just finished a pretty significant hardware upgrade to Despina's very basic Dell Dimension 3000.

Among the improvements were boosting it up to 1GB of RAM, adding a 128MB graphics card (although it was only a PCI card, i didn't have much choice: the board didn't even have an AGP slot). I also got a DVD burner for it.

Now the machine's not too shabby at all if you discount the port the graphics … Read more →

Honeymoon entry

We got back from the honeymoon on Friday, and this entry i'll devote solely to the honeymoon, and leave what's happened since Friday (a considerable amount to blog) for the next entry. Just in case anyone's wondering, I haven't blogged before today because today was the day our internet was finally connected to the unit, but more on that next entry.

Onto the Honeymoon: On the Tuesday after the wedding we flew out to the USA to go to Vegas and LA. We had to catch 3 consecutive planes to get to Vegas: Brisbane to Sydney, Sydney to LA, and … Read more →

The week ahead

We now have passed the 7 day marker ahead of the wedding on this Saturday. Before we get to that, I might as well recap on stuff that has happened this past week.

Me showered in paperThis past week was my last week at work, and I wrapped up most loose ends and ended getting a lot of stuff done that I didn't really expect to work through. Just before I left on Friday, the lovely girls from reception showered me with confetti acquired from the document hole-puncher (see the pic on the right).

That night we went to Andrew's place for a … Read more →

2005: Year in Review

It's that time of year again! Yes, this is my 'Year in Review' entry. This year proved to be an interesting and fulfilling one, yet stressful one. 2005 for me was a year of many 'lasts': last semester of uni, the last as a student, last of the Star Wars movies (please don't laugh!), and probably most important of all, it will have been the last full calendar year before I get married.

For those who aren't familiar with my 'Year in Review', it is the highlights of my year that I have taken from my own blog entries, with … Read more →

Holidays and Christmas Approaching

Santa and Reindeer Queen St MallI know I haven't mentioned it, but it is that time of year again: this wonderful time where a few people still celebrate Christ Jesus coming into our world. The picture on the right was taken in the City where they have a pretty impressive Santa and reindeer wire-skeletons lit up with little blue lights hanging from the Queen St mall roof. (please no Santa vs. Jesus flame wars here)

We did the majority of our Christmas shopping this week on Monday and Tuesday night in the city. The City was open late till 9 all this week, and although … Read more →

Earning My Wage & PHOTOshare

Today was was a really busy and hectic day at work, probably the worst I have faced so far. Why? Today was the day that we changed phone systems from the old PABX one to the new Mitel IP phones, and plus I was the only full-time IT Support guy in the Brisbane office, as the others had gone to Sydney for the day.

I arrived at work to the lovely screeching sound of UPS alarms to find the servers being out of power and basically all computing systems down, including the phones. The UPS had kicked and safely shut-down … Read more →
