Gaming, Birthdays, Football

Not really that much has happened in the past few days. Friday night I went over to Michael's place to play some games. It was pretty good, mainly because it meant I could play against some formidable opposition; Des doesn't really give me too much trouble ;); I think she has only beaten me in Wii Tennis, and only once.

It also revealed how cool Rayman is multiplayer. I'm starting to get really really frustrated at Australia's crippling nunchuck shortage for the Wii. I hope Nintendo gets their act together and start sending us some big shipments real soon.

Turning Off PC Gaming?

Console vs PCIf there is one thing in which by purchasing the Nintendo Wii has changed my opinion on gaming (other than the Wii being totally cool), it is how much simpler and easier console gaming is compared to PC gaming.

It's always been that way, but historically i've always been more of a PC gamer than a console one. I totally skipped the previous generation of consoles (PS2, Gamecube, XBox), but continued playing games on my computer.

However now that i'm a responsible self-subsisting adult who has reacquainted himself with console gaming, I can see so many more advantages that console … Read more →

Birthday

Birthday CandlesNothing much has really happened over few days, except for yesterday, which was my Birthday. As the years go on, my birthday seems to feel less and less like an event. I guess that it's a combination of it not being a good thing any more (getting older that is), and also that there is no more childish excitement about it.

Yesterday I turned 24, which I think officially marks me departing the 'low-twenties' category, and sees me enter the 'mid-twenties' (in my opinion low is x0-x3, mid is x4-x6, and late is x7-x9, where 'x' is the decade).

Vista Released

Windows VistaThe big geek news this past week is the general consumer release of Windows Vista.

In the computing world this is of course a massive event. This is enhanced by the fact that it has been a long time in the making: it has been over five years since the release of Windows XP, making it the longest ever period between Windows releases. The APC writers regularly remind us that World War II was fought and won in less time (although if you count the time between releases, WWII was 1 year longer).

For a detailed and slightly technical run … Read more →

First Experiences Using Ebay

eBay logoYou may remember me blogging about my very critical opinion on eBay a few months ago. You may then be surprised that I have used eBay three times in the past week, and my opinion of it has changed a little.

It all started last week that when stumbling around the internet I saw posted in a forum on Whirlpool that a local online store was selling the Nintendo 'Wavebird' wireless Gamecube controllers for a very cheap price. The Nintendo Wii i bought before Christmas is 100% backwards compatible with its predecessor's (the Gamecube) games and controllers. Because I thought … Read more →

Youth Conference Wrap-Up

Continuing on from my previous entry on the beginning of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia's 9th National Youth Conference, on Saturday and Sunday the Conference had it's final days.

On Saturday we went down to the Gold Coast and at St. Anna's the conference voted on some spectacularly general resolutions that even the most hypercritical person would find difficult not to vote for. After that we went to lunch at Ashmore's, which like last time, failed to impress me with the food.

After that we went on a boat trip from Marina Mirage up to Sanctuary Cove. On the … Read more →

National Youth Conference Begins

This Australia Day long weekend the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia is having it's 9th Youth Conference right here in Brisbane. It kicked off last night with Archbishop Stylianos and the Governor of Queensland opening the conference. It will finish on Sunday with the ordination of local boy (well now a bit older than a boy) Nic Brown into the priesthood.

After the official opening in the Church, last night was the formal opening dinner attended by deputy-premier Anna Bligh among other dignitaries. This youth conference sees the largest gathering of delegates at any National Youth Conference: over 480 from … Read more →

Summer Arrives on Greek Time

Summer HeatSummer has properly arrived in Brisbane over the last week or so. We finally have had our first sustained period of 30 degree plus weather, and of course I hate it. It's only about a month and a half late, so it must be running on Greek time (i.e. late!) this year.

Though I am grateful that it has taken a while coming, but I don't want 3 months of heat starting from now because that would suck. The air-conditioning has been, as always, the contraption that is helping me from going insane.

Speaking of insane, some of our neighbours … Read more →

Footballing Weekend

Queensland Roar GameIt's been pretty much a football weekend: Saturday night I went to the Queensland Roar game, today I played indoor, and tonight is the big Arsenal v Manchester United game.

I didn't do too much yesterday other than the usual washing and cleaning, although I did have enough time to finish off Donkey Kong Country. It's the first time I've actually managed to finish the whole game (i had it about 10 years ago on the SNES), although it was mainly thanks to some cheats. Thank you Mr Internet, I couldn't done with you 10 years ago.

Saturday night … Read more →

Paginated: Blog Script Update

One of the things that have peeved me off about this blog script (as well as a few others), is the script not paginating a long list of entries. For example, when I would go to list the month of last November, it would list all 30 entries one after another on the one page. If you did a search with a really generic term you could get hundreds on the one page.

Tonight i pulled my finger out and actually coded into the script the ability to break up a long list of entries into pages (in my case … Read more →
