Shaped & Into Another Final

This month I'd actually thought I'd give my internet data transfer quota a real run for its money (literally). With a week to go in my billing period, i kicked of downloading some torrents that i've been wanting to download for a while. Quickly enough, for the first time ever I hit our 12GB quota on Friday.

For a lot of people reading this from overseas, the notion of 'download/transfer quotas' for an internet service would be totally foreign (pun intended). But such is the state of internet service in this country that we actually have them.

Anywho, so hitting … Read more →

Liturgy By Candlelight

Candlelight liturgyAs part of the 'Earth Hour' event on Saturday night that encouraged everyone to turn off lights and appliances for an hour to save electricity and prevent global warming, the priests at St George decided to do the Saturday night liturgy without a single light on in the Church.

Although it was potential health-and-safety nightmare, it was a fantastic experience. Other than the presanctified gifts service (only in the afternoons during lent) and the Resurrection service (only for a few minutes once a year), this doesn't really happen.

As the inset photo (taken from my phone) indicates, with was pretty … Read more →

Good Geeky Weekend

Family Guys Star WarsAfter finishing the work we had to do on Friday's public holiday, I've actually had a really good long weekend. I've actually managed to watch four Star Wars movies on DVD this weekend, after being somewhat 'restricted' from watching it in the past two years since the wedding ;).

It was really great watching the original trilogy again, especially after seeing the recent Robot Chicken and Family Guy Star Wars specials (especially lols @ this Admiral Ackbar skit from Robot Chicken).

This latest Star Wars viewing is not really a coincidence: lately i've gotten into a bit of Star … Read more →

It’s been a while… & Pleasant Surprises

It's been a while since i've blogged, and March is turning out to be a slow month in the Costi blogging arena.

On the weekend I played indoor and we ended our run of successive draws by winning a vital game quite convincingly. Unfortunately Arsenal couldn't do the same and ended up with their 4th successive draw, this giving Man Utd a three point lead at the top after being five points in front themselves, so it looks increasingly like Arsenal have thrown the title away with these draws.

Despite this week being a four-day week, it isn't really with … Read more →

Sickness

I've been feeling in a very un-blogging mood lately, possibly related to the cold/flu that i've been enduring for the past few days. Usually my immune system is pretty strong so i tend to miss these things going around, and if i do get something it's usually only a runny/blocked nose for a day and then i'm good.

Well i've had this sickness since the weekend, and other than a light head the most annoying about any cold for me is a runny nose. I can't stand having to constantly wipe/blow all the time.

Why couldn't a cold trigger a … Read more →

Banks Are Criminals

Interest Rates**rant warning!**

As a person paying off a home loan, I have of course been watching with great interest (pun intended) the situation regarding interest rates in the past few years.

I perfectly understand the role of the Reserve Bank in Australia and it's responsibility to increase and decrease the standard interest rates in regards to controlling inflation and economic growth among other financial indicators.

That's all good, and I perfectly understand the banks changing their rates in line with the movement made by the Reserve Bank.

What I do have a massive problem with however, is the recent actions … Read more →

Why We Need R Rated Games

R18+ Rating stickerLately in the media there has been some coverage of the Government putting back on the agenda for the meeting of attorneys-general the issue of introducing of an 'R18+' rating for video-games.

For many years now, video-games in Australia have been subject to an entirely different classification and ratings system to that applied to other forms of media such as movies, magazines, and publications.

Whilst movies and other media can be subjected to an 'R18+' rating, the maximum rating that can be applied to video-games is that of 'MA15+', with the more violent or more sexually explicit games that … Read more →

Best. Summer. Ever

As we enter the last few days of summer '07-'08, I really have to say that, at least meteorologically, this has been one of the best summers that I can remember.

Now i'm sure that the folks down south (who experienced ridiculously hot weather (40C+)) and the folks up north (who were flooded repeatedly) will disagree, but at least in Brisbane, this summer has been absolutely fantastic.

It really hasn't been that hot at all, which for our sub-tropical climate is almost quite unheard of: i can remember only 2-3 nights all summer that I had to turn the air-conditioning … Read more →

Horrific, Frustrating Arsenal

Eduardo tackleI watched the Arsenal game last night over my parent's place, and I have to say that I haven't seen a more frustrating and depressing game in a very long time.

The main incident (other than the 2-2 score-line), was an absolutely horrific tackle in the 3rd minute of the game. The picture to the right shows the moment right before impact. The result of that left a young talented player on the floor with his leg literally snapped in two, his season over and more importantly his whole career seriously in doubt.

The injured Eduardo needed nine minutes of … Read more →

It’s Official: HD-DVD Goes the Way of the Betamax

Hi Definition Disc Format WarWe've all been saying it for over a month now, but today it became official. Today Toshiba officially announced it's surrender in the Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD high-definition disc format war. HD-DVD is dead, Blu-ray emerges victorious.

To be honest it has surprised me that they've given up so soon, but in the end it was a wise choice. There was no way they could possibly win, so they've saved themselves from wasting a lot of money by continuing to pursue a futile course of action.

This is great news for us consumers though, it means that now we have … Read more →
