Just like last year, I only wrote 5 blog posts this year. I'm kinda happy with that, but it's been a mixed year overall. Continuing with the same format from the past couple of years:
Health stuff
Unfortunately, last year's hospital-admission-free streak came to an end in March. My Drs wanted to make some changes to my medications (which were very successful but maybe not great long-term), and my body didn't respond that well.
I spent about a week in hospital getting things back on track, and after reverting to my previous medication regime, things settled down again for the rest of the year.
Work stuff
To describe this year of work as "mixed" would be the understatement of the century 😅. Although I personally did pretty well, most of my colleagues (and friends) at current employer were let go.
The AI revolution has changed almost everything about how I work as a technical writer. It's probably the biggest change in the tech industry I've seen, and definitely the biggest change of my 12+ years as a tech writer (even more so than the introduction of Git and a docs-as-code workflow).
Blog post highlights
Onto the list for this year:
April
- 3D Printing Stuff: Very handy, and although the printing frequency has eased off later in the year, just last week I brought the printer out and made a battery box for some of our rechargeable batteries.
May
- Presenting: The Admiral Ackbar ‘ACK’ Emoji: I still use this emoji all the time at work, and I get a buzz when I see other people using it too 😁.
July
- New NAS. Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying, Became a Hypocrite, and Bought Another Synology: It's hard to believe it's been almost six months with this new NAS, and it's performed admirably. It currently hosts 1 VM and 14 containers (and counting). And by the way, Synology eventually reversed their crazy drive restriction policy.
October
- Immich: Self-hosted Google Photos Alternative: A great project. We still go through the 'on-this-day' pictures most days.
December
- New Mobile: Google Pixel 10: It's been a while between new phones, and while this new one isn't that exciting, 'not that exciting' is pretty fine with me at the moment.
