It's been a while since I've had a Star Wars film to review! After having one every year or two, it's now been almost 7 years (!) since The Rise of Skywalker.
On Friday, we saw The Mandalorian and Grogu, the film spin-off from The Mandalorian TV series.
Apparently, this movie was born out of a season 4 that never happened, and to be honest, the movie does feel like 4-5 episodes of the show condensed into a movie.
I'm not sure if that's a bad thing or not, but watching the movie, you could almost draw imaginary lines between parts of the movie and think "That part was probably a TV episode".
If you liked the TV series, everything is still there: Pedro Pascal is back in person (yay), little Grogu is still as adorable as ever (as are the little Anzellan mechanics), bounty missions, the New Republic, etc.
A few things I didn't like:
- Rotta the Hutt being so jacked was weird. I know he was all fit for the gladiator stuff, but I think they took it a little far!
- The Hutts speaking Basic (English) was distracting to me. I know there's precedent in the animated series for them to speak Basic, but AFAIK they've never done it in any live-action content before now. Like the animated series, I know this is probably for kids not to have to read a lot of subtitles, but it felt very weird to me that Hutts could enunciate those words.
- Sigourney Weaver was a nothing character.
- From a story POV, nothing really happened to advance Din Djarin's or Grogu's story in any meaningful way.
Overall, I enjoyed the movie without it being anything groundbreaking or original. It was a fun time, but I think I'd still prefer these type of 'adventure' stories as being a TV series.
