The End of ‘How I Met Your Mother’

How I Met Your MotherHow I Met Your Mother finally concluded this week after nine seasons. Despina and I have been watching the show since the first season, and it was actually one of the first TV series we started watching as a married couple all the way back in 2006.

The past three or four seasons had seen it drop in quality, and it wouldn't be a stretch to say that we were watching it more out of an obligation to see it through, rather than genuine anticipation and enjoyment.

So the finale aired yesterday, and whilst it was good to see it finish, I can't help but record my opinion on it here.

Stop reading here if you don't want to be spoiled!

I can't say I enjoyed any part of the plot that ended the show.

The plot of Ted meeting the mother, her dying, and Ted ending up with Robin seemed like a total cop-out to me.

I would have been fine with that kind of story as the ending if it happened at the end of season 5 or 6. But from season 6 onwards, and especially in this final season prior to the finale, the main focus of the show was Ted moving on from Robin, and Robin and Barney progressing in their respective characters to actually end up marrying each other. By season 9, the whole Ted/Robin thing just felt so tired and old.

So for them to so flippantly throw away 2-3 seasons of character development of three of the major characters, in what amounted to about 20 minutes in the finale episode, was a total cop-out. For example, Barney literally regressed from 2+ seasons of character development in about 5 minutes of screen time.

I don't mind the sadness of the mother dying, but I did mind them only giving about 10 seconds to the event. The finale overall seemed so rushed, and that is inexcusable considering how many 'filler' episodes there were in this final season where almost nothing significant happened to wrap things up.

In looking back at the series, almost all of my memorable moments of the show happened in the first 4-5 seasons. Mary the Paralegal, would still be my favourite episode, but other moments like Robin Sparkles, the early slap-bet stuff, crazy-hot scale, etc, were all before season 6.

I feel like the whole last 2 or 3 seasons (almost 72 episodes!) were just all repeated red herrings and filler, and not in a good way. If they were going to go with the ending they went for, they should have ended it at season 6 and opened a seafood store instead.
