I Just Can’t Get Into Skyrim

I like to think of myself as a pretty diverse gamer: I play across multiple genres, on multiple platforms, from both AAA big-publisher titles down to the small downloadable indie-type games.

But if I'm brutally honest with myself, all that is a big fat lie. Recently I have come to the realisation that, in terms of video games, I like what I like and even the best game that doesn't fit into my pre-conceived set of 'likes' or 'interests' will never grab me.

Case in point: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. This game was fantastically well received critically, and last year it even topped a lot of people's' 'Game of the Year' lists and awards. After playing through other relatively more interesting titles around the turn of the year, I figured I'd pick up Skyrim on the cheap and enjoy it for myself.

After sorting out a few bugs (e.g. 'artefact' and 'indoor' graphical bugs), I poured a good half a day into playing Skyrim, and that's about as far as I got. No matter how I've tried to motivate myself, I just can't get into it.

The whole fantasy "swords, arrows, magic, kingdoms, elves" thing has never appealed to me, and despite all of Skyrim's other qualities, I've resigned it as the latest entry onto my pile of shame.

It's not that I don't like RPGs; I loved Mass Effect. I think that sci-fi is just more my deal; i'll take "guns, lasers, spaceships, planets, and aliens" anyday of the week over "swords, arrows, horses, villages, and elves". Despite them being apparently the same thing with different settings, one I adore, the other antipathy.

There are exceptions of course, with Zelda being the one that comes to mind.

  1. Skyrim? More like Bye-rim, amirite?

Zelda is a good fantasy tale. And Mass Affect (sic) is basically fantasy in space! There's a thing called Star Wars, which has wookies in it (space-dogs), that is a bit of both worlds. Perhaps you would like it?
