The Best and Worst of 2010

So it's that time of year for my critical wrap. Here are the Best and Worst of what i saw and played in the year that was 2010.

How To Train Your DragonMovies

Best Movie: How To Train Your Dragon

HTTYD was easily my stand-out movie for me this year. I loved the story, the 3D was spectacular (even rivalling Avatar in my opinion), the visuals were great, and the score was wonderful. Such a great movie, and the fact that it's the only movie this year i've seen multiple times cements its status as my favourite of the 2010.

Honourable mentions: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, She's Out of My League, The Other Guys, Hot Tub Time Machine.

Worst Movie: Shrek 4

Mostly because of my health, I managed to avoid watching most of the really bad movies this year (yay), but of the movies I did actually watch, Shrek 4 would have to be one of the most disappointing. It was the same tired old formula rolled out to cash in on the 3D wave, and in the age of Wall-E, HTTYD, and other much better and fresher animated movies, overall it felt pretty stale.

Honourable mention for worst movie: Date Night

Games

It was a much better year for games than the previous one. Mostly being filled with sequels and reboots rather than any new IPs that took my fancy.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2Best Games:

PC: Easy choice for this one: Battlefield: Bad Company 2. The single player was average, but the fact that this game got me into modern-day combat multiplayer is a testament to how good it really is. I've spent waaaay too much time playing it this year, and have many good gaming moments and memories as a result (including diving and ditching a C4-laden-helicopter into 2 tanks). The recent Vietnam expansion is still keeping it fresh.
PC Honourable mentions: none really...

Wii: Mario Galaxy 2. As close to platforming perfection as a game has gotten. Great gameplay (has Yoshi :)), and such a fantastic score I have it in my iTunes library. Well worth the time and money.
Wii Honourable mentions: Sonic Colours, Donkey Kong Country Returns

PS3: Heavy Rain. There were hugely varying opinions on this game, but i found it really enthralling. As i said in my original entry (linked above), the best word to describe it is 'intense'. I still want to play through it again making all the opposite decisions of what I originally made.
PS3 Honourable mentions: Transformers: War for Cybertron

Worst Games:

PC: Aliens vs. Predator. There was a lot wrong with this game and not that much right. It felt like a bad port with terrible control schemes, it absolutely thrashed the graphics card but wasn't that impressive graphics-wise, and was quite repetitive. It had it's moments, but overall was a big let-down.
PC Honourable mentions for worst game: Medal of Honor, and I'll put Supreme Commander 2 here as well in terms of sheer disappointment.

Wii: I didn't get that many bad Wii games this year, so i'll skip this one.

PS3: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2. This was a short game that felt more like a long expansion/DLC to the original title rather than a whole new game. Terrible voice acting, very repetitive, slightly improved on the original without getting rid of the stuff that made the original frustrating (e.g invisible walls, bugs, long and repetitive boss fights). Overall a very poor showing from LucasArts.
