I Love This City & Dentist

Brisbane RiverFireI love this city. For the unaware, I live in Brisbane, Australia. Unlike many who live here, I am an unashamed Brisbane lover. Many say the city is too small, doesn't have a great night-life, blah blah blah. (The picture right is another from this year's RiverFire fireworks and jet fly-by).

I was born here, and God willing, I will probably die here as well. Much more than my home, Brisbane is part of me and I really can't imagine living anywhere else. I guess what really makes me love Brisbane is that it has everything a city has: shops, movies, unis, etc etc; but isn't as crowded, expensive, tense, or formal as the bigger southern cities of Sydney and Melbourne. Add to that living in the most liveable city in the best country in the world, and you can't get much better than this.

Brisbane isn't exactly a small place, according to various statistics the city has a population of just over 1.75 million. I've been to a lot of cities around the world, but I still can't find anything better than here (but I do have slight bias). I guess most people fall into one of two categories: those that love Brisbane and will never leave; and those that hate it and want to get away for various reasons. Obviously, I fall in the former. The only thing I really don't like about it here is the sub-tropical climate: summer is way to hot and humid for me, and winter not cold or long enough. But air-con easily solves that ;).

Divided by the Brisbane River, there are well documented differences between north-side and south-side Brisbanites of which I fall into the latter. I don't really like the north-side, and people from up there are mostly strange (sorry Michael and others ;)), but I guess it's because it's outside my comfort-zone :).

Anyway, enough of my Brisbane rambling.

Wednesday I went to the dentist for my regular check-up. Unsurprisingly I needed a filling. I've had more than a few over the years, so i'm used to all the injections and the whole process. This was was pretty bad filling though: i guess the badness started when the dentist's particularly clumsy assistant accidentally bumped the chair control to make it move forward 15 or so centimetres while the dentist was in the act of giving me the anaesthetic injection. Not the best start, but after a lot of digging and drilling and a bit of choking, it was done.

Because I couldn't really eat solid foods for a few hours after, I had some milk drink with a muffin for lunch. The milk did not agree with me at all, and it pretty much went straight through me throughout the night. Not pleasant, and I'm beginning to suspect that I may be lactose intolerant, although cereal in the morning is usually ok.

I took yesterday off sick as a result, and watched through Star Wars Episodes I & II, of which I haven't managed to watch really any Star Wars since the wedding. Shame on me. We capped off the prequel trilogy by watching Episode III tonight. Great stuff. I'll have to watch the Original Trilogy again sometime soon as well.

Speaking of that, they are releasing the Original Trilogy again on DVD next week, although this upcoming release sells them separately and contains the totally unaltered original theatrical versions of the movies (not the 2004 DVD versions of the Special Editions) on a bonus disc, which will probably force me to buy them :x.

TGIF.

  1. everybody knows northsiders are very different from southsiders. In my own personal experience, I've had a few 'incidents' with native northsiders (you don't really count as one, because where you live isn't really Brisbane).
